From 1999 till july 2007 he was researcher and teaching assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He worked on the bipeds lucy and Veronica. Besides walking robots, he studied actuators with controllable stiffness. First the PPAM (Pleated Pneumatic Artificial Muscle) and then he developed the MACCEPA actuator (Mechanically Adjustable Compliance and Controllable Equilibrium Position Actuator). In 2007 he recieved the PhD degree, with the work: Compliant Actuation for Biologically Inspired Bipedal Walking Robots.

From august 2007 on he worked half time on the IOF project, in order to enhance coorperation between industrie and university. He also works on the ALTACRO project and since september 2009 he became part time guest professor for a course on CAD design.
