Elias Saerens was born in Aalst (Belgium) in 1994 and raised in Opwijk. He received a joint M.S. degree in Electromechanical Engineering from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium in 2017. Between September 2016 and January 2017 he also participated in the Swiss-​European Mobility Programme (SEMP) for a study abroad at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). From September 2017 he has been working as a PhD researcher and was awarded a fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO) for his research.
His research is focused towards the study and development of redundant, compliant actuators to improve energy efficiency in robotic applications.
