Christopher van Vlerken received his B.E. degree in electromechanical engineering from Brussels University (ULB-Université Libre de Bruxelles), Belgium, in 2019. He continued with his Master‚s and received his M.E. degree in mechatronics engineering with the Department of Human robotics, Brussels University, in a BRUFACE (Brussels Faculty of Engineering) program, which is a joint initiative between Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in 2021

During his studies and especially during his Master‚s thesis, he got acquainted with the mechanical design of physical interfaces, data processing, the development of 3D printed sensors, modelization, machine learning, and the mechanical properties of soft tissues.

He is now working on ergonomics-oriented physical interface designs for exoskeletons and developing novel approaches. These are based on active interfaces to, on the one hand, adapt the cuffs to the user‚s individual physiology without the need for customized designs or qualified personnel to assist with donning and, on the other hand, improve the comfort and safety that are dramatically lacking in current methods.

Research

Sensing, estimation and actuating; Kinematics and dynamics; Software and data acquisition; Robot manipulation and interfaces.
